Window Restoration

It is not our practice to tear apart and relead windows simply because they are old. We only replace the lead matrix if the original lead contains impurities that have allowed it to become brittle. This condition is sometimes found in lead manufactired during war time. Although, during WWII, this firm was able to find lead without impurities, and the windows we created during that period contain uncorrupt lead.

At Hiemer & Company, we practice Sympathetic Restoration of stained glass, which seeks to keep as much of the original fabric of a window as possible. Bulging is gently flattened, broken solder joints are repaired, and dislodged pieces are carefully reset. When pieces cannot be salvaged, we have an extensive selection of glass for replacement and excellent artists capable of recreating the painted techniques of the original designers.
